PROUD OF YOU

A very good friend of mine was going through rough times and I found that the best way to express my feelings to her was through video postcards that I made for her. These simple images could give her the support that no words could. Here are 3 of the 6 that I made. Important is to sit still and watch the whole film to get it.

FAMILY ARCHIVE

A few years ago I got a couple of boxes with film, shot by a lady between 1937 en 1965. I digitalized the footage and created a family film which was shown at the family reunion. It shows a beautiful time image and for the family it is of high worth. Now it has gone from being stuffed away on a shelve to all family members computers. Below a few clips from the film.

TIME FOR CARPETS

Tijd voor Tapijten (Time for Carpets) is an art project for parents and children that live in an asylum seekers center, focused on sharing knowledge around ancient crafts, traditions and family stories. Carpets are tied to stories. Stories are the center in this project carried out in 11 asylum centers. The results are shown in a traveling show starting on 21 april 2017.

WERELDWOORDEN

WERELDWOORDEN (World Words) is a creation of Stichting de Vrolijkheid in cooperation with Poetry Circle Nowhere, a platform for performing writers and writing performers. A group of young talented poetry writers who live in various asylum seeking centers in The Netherlands, created a performance with their poetry. I asked them to create images with their smartphones to support their poetry and I edited these which were projected during the performance.

Warp & Woof

Every carpet is historically a garden. As the garden (especially the eastern garden) is a sort of map of the world, the carpet consequently is an visualization of the world. For centuries human beings have been hiding their dreams, culture and personal stories in carpets. We presented our project the Magic Carpet on this Autumn night.

Roots the Movie

Although Amsterdam is a great city to live and to work in, it can always improve. Rabobank Amsterdam came up with the idea to help improve the city by founding the platform Amsterdam &Co, a platform for entrepreneurs to share networks and knowledge to improve the quality of life in the city. Every 6 months there is a new theme. The first theme was Roots. Together with Hermen van de Waal I produced this film for Amsterdam &Co to capture the meaning of 'roots' in relation to this most diverse city in the world.

IMPACT INVESTING

For Triodos Investment Management I produce video's of their events. This was the latest one: On the 9th of June, Triodos Investment Management hosted an event that focused on the transition to renewable energy. Speakers from Eneco, Vaanster, Tesla, Delta Lloyd Asset Management and Triodos Investment Management were in attendance to discuss the opportunities in sustainable energy and the future of the industry.

HART HOOFD PRIJS

Every year Triodos Bank nominates organisations that are worth mentioning. Together with Hermen van de Waal I make the video's for the public to vote. We have made dozens of these films since 2012. If you click on the image below you can watch the nominees of 2015:

MAGIC CARPET

In 2013 we went to Iran, Maartje Nevejan, Rogerio Lira and I, to create an ArtLab for 10 girls from Omid, an organisation in Teheran for abused girls. With artists, musicians, a carpet weaver, a cook and the girls we took a bus to a house at the coast and created the ingredients for the Magic Carpet - based on the stories of the girls.

Unnecessary Slaughter

After years of many discussions and court cases a horrifying decision has been made. 80 % of 3000 fallow deer shall be killed.

On June 2, 2014 Faisal Muqaddam was invited by Diamond Logos Nederland to give his introduction on "Living from Essence"

Parels van de Hofweb

Parels van de Hofweb - Pearls from the Hofweb - are short videos I made for the organic online shop - www.hofwebwinkel.nl Two farmer sons run this shop and the farmers behind it are amazing. They produce food with their hearts. Even if you don't understand the Dutch you will catch what I mean.

Altijd naar Binnen Luisteren means Always listening inside. A film in a psychiatric home as part of a multimedia project.

Eco Flores

Eco Flores is an organisation in Indonesia, run by Nina van Zinnicq Bergmann. An organisation for the sustainable development of the Islands Flores and Lembata.

The other Sudan

These video's form a dyptich and show the perspective on Sudan by refugees in the Netherlands. They share with us the beautiful side of their country. Amongst others the were showed in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, during the exhibition 'Memories from Home', as part of the festival 'The Other Sudan'.

In May 2009 I joined the Tällberg Learning Journey to Greenland: Climate change and economic development, led by Tom Cummings. We witnessed the massive ice melt with our own eyes. I made video postcards of some of the people that joined:

Munya in me

This beautiful empowering stop-motion film is written by my sister Fiona van Heemstra and directed by Masha Halberstad. "Munya in Me" is an animation about heavy ten-year-old Munya trying to avoid her bullies on her daily trip to the Turkish supermarket, mostly without success. Until one day she realizes that she shouldn't hide. She should show herself. In my opinion this is actually a film about leadership. Taking matters in your own hand. The film is in Dutch.
